Adequate Oak Regeneration--a Problem without a Solution?

چکیده

Oaks will be most scarce on good sites (Sand~r 1977; Smith, Rosier, and Hammack 1976; Trimble 1973; Trimble and Hart 1961). The reasons are simple but basic--not enough oaks are becoming established, and those that do are not developing adequately. Oaks on poorer sites are usually good stump sprouters. Sprouts grow fast and are thus competitive, especially since on poor sites there are usually fewer fast growing trees for the oaks to compete against.

Oak Shelterwood: A Technique to Improve Oak Regeneration

Oak Regeneration Dynamics Successful regeneration of oak on intermediate and high-quality sites (upland oak site index > 65 to 70 feet) is limited due to the lack of the vigorous advance regeneration and/or saplings/pole-sized trees that are capable of sprouting. Vigorous advance regeneration and/or stump sprouters are required at the time of regeneration on intermediate and highquality sites, ...

Natural Regeneration of Southern Bottomland Hardwoods

Many mixed hardwood stands found in bottomlands have been degraded by past harvesting practices that resulted in high grading the stand, thereby leaving the forester few options other than regeneration. Economic considerations usually constrain the choices to some form of complete overstory removal if adequate advance regeneration or sprouting potential is available. Success, in terms of number...
